The Marshes Community Benefit fund are delighted to award a grant of £2,000 to Shikara Shotokan Karate Club

The award will allow the club to refresh the protective pads/mitts for the juniors, the impact pads for adults and soft matting for the floor to improve safety. With this additional equipment the club would then be able to be more sustainable and appeal-able moving forward able to attract more junior members and have a wider positive impact on the local community.
The club is founded firmly on respect and tradition and over the years has trained dozens of students to Shodan / black belt from within Frodsham and Helsby building confidence and resilience as key life skills for all students.

Shikara Karate Club was formed in 1983 by Pam and Ken Cartwright at Helsby Committee Centre. Ken, his Son Gary and Daughter Jo were members of Chester Shotokan Karate Club and between them been training for many years.
The emphasis was on bringing their knowledge and creating a family run Club for ages 7 upwards. The club has always been a non profit set up keeping training fees to the bare minimum making it affordable for families to train and learn a traditional Martial Arts without financial pressure.
The club is 41 years old this year and up until 3 years ago Sensei Ken Cartwright was still teaching at the age of 82 until his sad passing. The club continues to thrive under Sensei Jo alongside Senior Students.
